PGA DFS Picks – Deutsche Bank Championship
I’ve been on vacation over the last couple of tournaments but I cashed in one, and cashed only half last week. I probably could’ve cashed in all 50/50s had Rose not shot a +7 on day one, but that’s golf for you.
This week will be tough. Only 30 players will be cut so there will be a good amount of 6/6’s but if you have the right players, 5/6 should be enough because more than likely a top owner player or two will miss the cut.
Key Stats This Week: Par 5 Scoring and Stroke Gained Tee to Green (T2G). I’ll also be looking at driving distance (DD) and birdie %, but the top two for me are P5s and T2G.
I actually am using two cash LU’s this week but I will share my favorite/top lineup.
Justin Rose (10.2k) – As much as I’d like to spend up to get Day or Rory (I did take Rory in my 2nd LU) I’m perfectly happy using Rose as it allows me more room in the LU and he’s a great play here anyways. Rose is 5th in P5s and 6th in T2G. Six straight cuts, and four of those were top six finishes. Rose is also 14th in DD and 4th in birdie or better %.
Bubba Watson (9.8k) – Bubba is actually my favorite play this week. Why he isn’t a 10.5k player, I can’t really say. He’s 1st in P5s, 1st in T2G, 2nd in DD, and 3rd in Birdie %. Wow. He’s been playing excellent golf of late, making 6/7 cuts, with a victory and three other top five finishes. If Day wasn’t playing the best golf in the world Bubba may have another win or two in that stretch.
Justin Thomas (7.9k) – I dip into the 7,000 range for the rest of my team, starting with Thomas. He’s 2nd in P5s and 18th in T2G. Six straight cuts with two top five finishes. I’m guessing he will be highly owned this week due to his price and recent form but that won’t keep me away in cash games.
Tony Finau (7.7k) – Tony is another guy I was liking for this course and with him playing well he’s an even better play. He’s only 34th in P5s but he’s 29th in T2G, 8th in DD, and 9th in birdie %. He’s made 8/9 cuts, with seven of those being top 25’s and two top 10’s. He has the skills for a top 10 finish this week.
Brendan Steele (7.1k) – I think at this price, Steele is a great play considering I can fit Rose/Watson because of him. He’s 34th in P5S and 15th in T2G, but he’s also 16th in birdie % and DD. Nothing spectacular but that’s solid consistency this season, mixed with recent form 4/6 top 25s. My only concern is those two non top 25 finishes were missed cuts.
JB Holmes (7.1k) – His recent form is OK because he’s been making cuts but he hasn’t had many high finishes lately which could be a little scary but his stats line up great for this course. He’s 5th in DD, 11th in birdie %, 17th in T2G, and 34th in P5s. He makes a fair amount of eagles as well so at 7.1k I think he will be passed over and could provide a nice contrarian play.
